Shaved Ice – Dec. 30

Well, I think a lot of college hockey fans are happy about the match-up they got for the GLI final today…

Quick hits

That rivalry showdown at Joe Louis Arena between Michigan and Michigan State got bumped up the calendar a bit. The Spartans and Wolverines will meet tonight in the Great Lakes Invitational championship, after both squads won their opening game of the prestigious tournament.

Michigan State opened the tournament with a 4 p.m. puck drop against Michigan Tech. Goals were hard to come by in the GLI’s first game, but thanks to Drew Palmisano, the Spartans survived. The senior goaltender stopped 45 saves to help them pick up a 3-1 win and advance to take on the winner of the Michigan-Boston College game. Greg Wolfe, Chris Forfar, and Brett Perlini scored for the Spartans.  Here was our recap.

Michigan made sure they would be seeing their arch-rival in the championship game by getting a quick start on the BC Eagles. The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from David Wohlberg and Luke Moffatt. While Boston College managed to tie it up in the second period, it wasn’t enough for the visiting team, as AJ Treais scored in the third, and Luke Glendening added an empty-netter. Highlight reel

We launched our brand-new YouTube channel yesterday. Here’s one of the videos we posted.

Outside the Mitten

Jaromir Jagr returned to Pittsburgh, and while he wasn’t welcomed back warmly by the fans, his team won.

Team Canada posted a 10-2 win over Denmark in the World Juniors tournament yesterday.

Meanwhile, Russia’s squad, led by a nine-point performance by Yevgeni Kuznetsov, beat Latvia 14-0. Kuznetsov’s total is one point shy of the WJC record, set by Peter Forsberg.

We broke our own rules to name a couple college kids our Michi-gamer of the night. Worth it.

Believe it or not, I didn’t spend the night in the Joe Louis Arena press box. But don’t worry, we’re driving back today, and we’ll have plenty more coverage of the whole day.
