Shaved Ice – Nov. 18

Sorry this is coming in a little later than usual. I was at Novi Ice Arena late last night, working on the captains cover shoot for the next issue of the magazine.

Quick hits

The up-and-down nature of the Red Wings this season continued last night, as the club lost 5-2 to rival San Jose at the Shark Tank. Niklas Kronwall scored a power-play goal in the first period, only to watch the Sharks post five unanswered goals and seize control of the game. Dan Cleary’s power-play strike at the 13:38 mark of the third period wasn’t enough for the Wings to overcome the deficit.

It was the NHL debut for Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith. He skated for 19:18, with a minus-2 rating.

Highlight reel

Well, Nashville’s Craig Smith just landed himself on the all-time blooper reel. Yet another teaching lesson for all the coaches out there – just put the puck in the net, and don’t get too fancy out there.

Outside the Mitten

The Stanley Cup hangover seems to be coming to an end for the Bruins, who have now won seven straight games.

The Sarnia Stings’ Nail Yakupov is the highest-rated prospect for the upcoming NHL Draft this summer, according to Central Scouting Services.

The Jets have recorded their first set of back-to-back wins since the move north.

Another fun-filled weekend of hockey is upon us. I’ll be at Yost tonight, and we’ll have Saturday coverage as well. Keep an eye on MiHockeyNow.com and our social media pages for plenty of hockey coverage throughout the weekend, including news from the High School Metro Invitational in Novi. Best of luck to all the youth teams out there getting ready for some big games.
