Shaved Ice – Oct. 12

By Michael Caples –

Welcome to Shaved Ice, the new daily blog for MiHockeyNow.com. Every morning, we will share a comprehensive summary of what’s happening in hockey around the Mitten – in the hopes of starting your day off right. Because let’s face it, what’s better than a little hockey in the morning?

Quick hits

Today I’ll be catching you up to speed with the start of the Red Wings’ season, because after all, I’m sure you’ve been pretty caught up with the Tigers’ postseason run and the Lions actually playing football for once. Tomorrow will be your primer for college hockey, and by next week, we’ll be getting into daily happenings for your favorite teams.

The Wings are 2-0, after posting a home win against Ottawa last Friday, and spoiling Peter Forsberg’s jersey retirement party in Denver the next day. Here was my report from the Wings’ home opener – while they posted five goals, the Wings weren’t too pleased with the three goals they allowed in the final period.

Through their first two wins, Detroit has showed off their depth. Eight different players have already scored goals for the Wings. Plus, both Jimmy Howard and Ty Conklin have already posted wins.

Highlight reel

Here’s a section where we will give you the latest and greatest hockey videos that have graced the Internet. To start it off, I figured I should lead with a classic. Enjoy:

Outside the Mitten

The Wings have had a few days off after their quick start, along with the rest of the NHL, apparently. There were only two games last night. Last night:

  • The Penguins topped the Panthers 4-2. Pittsburgh, playing without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, had goals from Pascal Dupuis, Matt Cooke, Richard Park, and James Neal en route to their third win of the season (3-0-1). Florida’s record dropped to 1-1. Read more
  • Former Red Wings assistant coach Paul MacLean picked up his first win as head coach of the Senators, beating Minnesota 4-3. Ottawa overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period to force a shootout, where all three of their shooters (Milan Michalek, Jason Spezza, and Daniel Alfredsson) beat Niklas Backstrom to earn the Sens’ first win of the season.
