Shaved Ice – July 9

MiHockey staffer Stefan Kubus here to help get you through another Monday.

Quick hits

The Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings) have signed defenseman Nathan Paetsch and winger Triston Grant to one-year deals.

Even though Nicklas Lidstrom has retired, he will remain with the Detroit Red Wings organization as a scout, as announced yesterday.

Highlight reel

This is an impressive showing you may have seen before. What you may not know about the kid in the video is that it’s Kevin Roy, a 19-year-old draftee of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (97th overall).

Roy just finished a stellar, record-breaking season with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars.

Outside the Mitten

As per Brian Hedger of NHL.com, the Chicago Blackhawks prospects hit the ice today for their development camp. Among the players present via invitation is Michigan State defenseman Jake Chelios. Meanwhile, Jake’s older brother and fellow Spartan, Dean, is on the ice in the Detroit Red Wings’ prospect camp.

It appears Shane Doan is getting ready to explore his options as a free agent. It’s believed as many as 11 teams are interested in the 35-year-old veteran’s services.
