Red Wings assign Jonathan Ericsson to Grand Rapids; recall Biega

By @MichaelCaples –

The Detroit Red Wings have assigned Jonathan Ericsson to their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Yesterday, the team placed the 35-year-old defenseman on waivers, and after he went unclaimed, the Wings were able to assign him to Grand Rapids this afternoon.

Ericsson last played for the Griffins in 2008-09, before full-time duty with the Wings ever since.

The native of Karlskrona, Sweden was the last overall pick in the 2002 NHL Draft. Defying the odds of having that trivia question associated with him, Ericsson has played in 662 NHL Games, recording 27 goals and 98 assists for 125 points, along with 531 penalty minutes and a -9 rating.

Detroit also recalled defenseman Alex Biega today, as well.
