Valtteri Filppula returns to Detroit

By @MichaelCaples –

Steve Yzerman’s bringing another familiar face back to Hockeytown.

Valtteri Filppula has signed with the Red Wings.

The former third-round pick of Detroit in 2002 spent the first eight seasons of his professional hockey career with the Original Six franchise before signing in Tamp Bay ahead of the 2013-14 season.

He spent three-plus seasons with the Lightning before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Last season, he played for the New York Islanders, registering 31 points in 72 games.

Over 948 NHL games, the native of Vantaa, Finland has posted 185 goals and 309 assists for 494 total points.

When he left for Tampa Bay in 2013, he talked about Yzerman being a factor in his decision to leave Detroit.

“It’s bittersweet,” the 29-year-old said while skating at the MSU pro camp in East Lansing. “It’s definitely a tough team to leave. I had a great time over here, great organization, great players I got to play with.”

“It’s a new beginning. I’m really excited about Tampa,” he said. “Obviously Yzerman was a big part of the decision, I talked to him quite a bit before.”
