Judging from a report from a prominent TSN reporter, Steve Yzerman wants some competition between the pipes in training camp.

The Red Wings are set to sign goaltender Calvin Pickard, as reported by TSN’s Frank Seravelli (who is also the president of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association).

Teams have been able to talk with free agents this week; the signing period officially starts tomorrow at noon.

Detroit already has Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier under contract for the 2019-20 campaign.

Pickard, 27, was a second-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2010. A native of Moncton, New Brunswick, he has bounced between the AHL and NHL throughout his career. In 104 total NHL games over eight pro seasons, he has registered a 2.93 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.

In 2016-17, he played in 50 games for the Avalanche, recording a 15-31-2 record with a .904 save percentage and 2.98 goals-against average.

Pickard is a product of the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL.
