LSSU’s Gelsinger, NMU’s Tolvanen, MTU’s Bliss named WCHA players of week

UPDATE: Lake Superior State’s Brayden Gelsinger has also been named the NCAA’s second star of the week for his performances discussed below.

By @MichaelCaples –

Let’s just start with the obvious – Atte Tolvanen was named goalie of the week by the WCHA.

The senior netminder for the Northern Michigan Wildcats scored a goal Friday night, becoming just the second goaltender in conference history to accomplish the feat.

He did his job between the pipes on the weekend, too, of course – Tolvanen stopped a conference-best 59 shots in the rivalry weekend with Michigan Tech.

More on his big night here:

He wasn’t the only Michigan resident to be honored by the conference, however. Lake Superior State forward Brayden Gelsinger shared forward of the week honors with Charlie Combs of Bemidji State, while Michigan Tech forward Trenton Bliss was named rookie of the week.

Gelsinger, a junior forward for the Lakers, tied for the NCAA and WCHA lead with five points on the weekend. He recorded his first career hat trick to help LSSU to a road sweep at Alaska.

Bliss, a freshman forward for the Huskies, tied for the college hockey lead with two goals, and a conference best among rookies with three points. He scored a power-play goal in both nights of the MTU/NMU rivalry set.
