Lake Superior State is down one Sault Ste. Marie native heading into the upcoming season.

The Lakers announced today that assistant coach Rich Metro has accepted a head coaching position at the prestigious Shattuck-St. Mary’s boarding school in Minnesota.

“We would like to thank Rich for his dedication and commitment to Laker hockey over the years,” said LSSU head coach Damon Whitten. “We wish him and his family well in this new opportunity and look forward to working with him in his new role.”

Metro spent a total of eight seasons on the LSSU coaching staff, first as video coordinator and volunteer coach in 2007-08 and assistant coach stints from 2011-14 and 2014-18. In between, he worked as the head coach of the Villard de Lans professional hockey team in France.

“We are very happy for Rich as he embarks on this well-deserved opportunity to continue his coaching career,” said LSSU Director of Athletics, Dr. David Paitson.  “Rich has been a valuable asset to the Laker hockey program for number of years and will be missed by both the Lake State and Sault community. We wish him the best of luck in his new journey.”
