Team USA beats Russia in U18 Worlds quarterfinals

They’re moving on.

With a 5-1 victory over host country Russia today, Team USA is advancing to the semifinals of the 2018 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship.

Joel Farabee broke a 1-1 tie with 7 minutes remaining in regulation to put the Team USA squad – a roster built from the National Team Development Program Under-18 Team with a few call-ups from the U17s – on the path to advancing in the prestigious tournament.

The U.S. will now take on the Czech Republic in the semifinals, after the Czechs pulled off an upset victory over Canada today.

Cole Caufield, one of the U17 call-ups, scored the first goal for Team USA in the quarterfinal win. Oliver Wahlstrom scored with 2:38 remaining in regulation to increase the lead to 3-1; Jake Wise and Jack Hughes increased the lead with empty-net goals shortly after.

Under-17 Team goaltender Spencer Knight stopped 16 of the 17 shots sent his way in the contest to record the win between the pipes.
