A top Red Wings prospect may be making his NHL debut this weekend.

Detroit has recalled Givani Smith from Grand Rapids, the team announced today.

It is assumed that he will be filling in for Luke Glendening, after the Grand Rapids native exited Wednesday’s game early due to an upper-body injury. Coach Jeff Blashill said after the game that Glendening will be out for “a little bit.”

Smith, 21, was a Red Wings’ second-round pick (46th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft. This season, he has recorded four points (two goals, two assists) and seven penalty minutes in four games with the Griffins.

Last year, his first full season in Grand Rapids, he registered 13 points, a +2 rating and 86 penalty minutes.

A native of Toronto, he spent four seasons in the OHL, posting a total of 135 points and 411 penalty minutes in time with the Barrie Colts, Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers.
