Red Wings announce 3 p.m. press conference with Steve Yzerman

It’s happening.

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that they will be having a 3 p.m. press conference today with…Steve Yzerman.

The legendary No. 19 will be joining Ken Holland and Chris Ilitch for a press conference at Little Caesars Arena in what is expected to be the announcement for Yzerman becoming the team’s next general manager.

A fitting day, of course, as it is April 19, 2019.

While it seemed likely that ‘The Captain’ was coming home after taking a lesser role with Tampa Bay, it was expected that the question of whether he was joining the Wings would take longer to answer because the Lightning were a heavy favorite to win the Stanley Cup.

After Tampa was eliminated in the first round earlier this week by Columbus, it appears to have changed the timeline for Yzerman.

Multiple reports state that he will assume the role of general manager for the Wings, while Holland will remain as senior vice president.
