Notre Dame announces outdoor game with Michigan

By @MichaelCaples –

The Wolverines and the Fighting Irish will be playing at Notre Dame Stadium.

In a hockey game, not football.

Notre Dame just formally announced that their game with the Wolverines will be taking place outdoors in South Bend on Jan. 5, 2019.

The outdoor contest will be taking place four days after the same site plays host for the 2019 NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins.

Tickets will go on sale on Nov. 5.

Notre Dame and Michigan have met 140 times in hockey – the Wolverines hold a 76-59-5 edge in the series. However, Michigan will be seeking revenge from last season, as the Fighting Irish beat their rivals in the national semifinals at the 2018 Frozen Four when Jake Evans scored with 5.2 seconds remaining to give the Irish a 4-3 win.

Notre Dame comes to Ann Arbor for a pair of contests on Nov. 9-10.

This will be the eighth outdoor game for the Wolverines in the modern era. They helped kick off the trend of outdoor games when they battled Michigan State in the “Cold War” on Oct. 6, 2001 at Spartan Stadium.

The Wolverines have played in the following outdoor contests:

  • “Cold War” game vs. Michigan State – Spartan Stadium, Oct. 6, 2001
  • “Camp Randall Hockey Classic” vs. Wisconsin – Camp Randall Stadiu, Feb. 6, 2010
  • “Big Chill at the Big House” vs. Michigan State – Michigan Stadium, Dec. 11, 2010
  • “Frozen Diamond Faceoff” vs. Ohio State – Progressive Field, Jan. 13, 2012
  • “Hockeytown Winter Festival” edition of the Great Lakes Invitational (two games) – Comerica Park, Dec. 27-28, 2013
  • “Hockey City Classic” vs. Michigan State – Soldier Field, Feb. 7, 2015
