Recruiting: Derek Daschke commits to Omaha

By @MichaelCaples –

Derek Daschke is on his way to the University of Nebraska Omaha for his college hockey career.

The Troy native and Chicago Steel defenseman announced today that he is joining the National Collegiate Hockey Conference-based program next season.

“I chose Omaha because I thought it was a good fit for me,” Daschke told MiHockey. “They have an amazing rink and hockey facilities. They have a coaching staff that will help me get better on a day-to-day basis.”

Daschke, an Oakland Jr. Grizzlies alum, is in the midst of his fourth USHL season. He played a key role in the Chicago Steel’s run to a league championship last spring, and now serves as the Steel’s captain in his final junior season.

Next up, it’s competing in one of college hockey’s best conferences – one that’s home to Western Michigan, a team Daschke was once verbally committed to join.

“I am looking forward to playing in the NCHC next year and playing for UNO.”
