Michigan Tech loses overtime heartbreaker to Notre Dame in NCAA Tournament

By @MichaelCaples –

A heartbreaking ending for Michigan Tech.

Really the only way to describe it.

The Huskies came within inches of beating No. 1-seeded Notre Dame during a dominating stretch of time in overtime. At one point, the puck was behind goaltender Cale Morris and just waiting to be knocked into the net.

Then, all of a sudden, Notre Dame won.

After finally escaping their own end – Michigan Tech had completed full line changes while maintaining possession of the puck – the Irish rushed down the ice, and eventually, defenseman Jordan Gross fired a shot through a crowd that beat Packy Munson.

The heartbreaking sequence of events (following sustained pressure in the Notre Dame zone:

Notre Dame prevailed 4-3 after Michigan Tech had forced overtime on a goal from Jake Jackson at the 18:54 mark of the third period, bringing to a close a remarkable postseason run by MTU in the first game of the NCAA Tournament.

Joel L’Esperance and Gavin Gould also scored for Tech in the contest; Tech’s second-straight national tournament appearance after the club secured an automatic bid with their WCHA championship game victory against rival Northern Michigan.
