Darian Locklear, Julianna Ward-Brown remembered at MAHA state tournament

TAYLOR – Wednesday night was about more than just hockey at the first full day of the 2018 Tier 1 girls’ state tournament.

The hockey community honored and remembered Darian Locklear and Julianna Ward-Brown, the two Meijer 16U girls who passed away earlier this month, throughout the night at the Taylor Sportsplex.

Every team wore decals with the players’ numbers encased in hearts on their helmets; the Meijer girls are all wearing special patches on their jerseys, as well.

After a moment of silence to remember Locklear and Ward-Brown before Meijer 16U’s first game – a 7 p.m. contest against Little Caesars – the families of both players were welcomed onto the ice for a ceremonial puck drop.

It was the first time the majority of the girls’ hockey world has congregated in one place since the tragic moment, and the outpouring of support was the latest reminder of why the hockey community is such a special place.
