Brighton wins second-straight Division 1 state title

By @MichaelCaples –

PLYMOUTH – It was closer than people may have expected.

In the end, however, it was Brighton prevailing once again.

Less than 24 hours after a rivalry battle with Detroit Catholic Central, the Bulldogs took care of business against Saginaw Heritage.

With a 5-2 win, the Bulldogs won the 2018 MHSAA Division 1 state title game – Brighton’s second in a row, and fourth since 2012.

Mathew Kahra, Will Jentz, Nate Przysiecki and Evan MacDonald scored for the Bulldogs, while Harrison Fleming recorded the win between the pipes. Jentz also added the empty-netter to seal the game for Brighton.

David Helpap and John Michael Watson found the back of the net for the Hawks, while Jack Jesko stood tall in the Saginaw Heritage crease.

The victory marked the 437th win for Bulldogs head coach Paul Moggach, who has built a high school hockey dynasty in Brighton.
