Calderone gives Wolverines shootout win against Spartans Friday night

By @MichaelCaples –

On a winter storm-filled Friday, the Spartans and Wolverines treated the fans at Munn Ice Arena to extra rivalry hockey.

The two storied hockey programs played to a 1-1 tie in regulation, and a tie in overtime.

In overtime, with a B1G point and bragging rights on the line, the Wolverines prevailed.

It was captain Tony Calderone beating goaltender Johnny Lethemon to record the lone goal in the shootout, giving Michigan the victory after the two teams recorded a NCAA tie.

The regulation goals came from Michigan’s Quinn Hughes and Michigan State’s Carson Gatt.

Lethemon was outstanding between the pipes for the Spartans, as Michigan State was outshot by a 2-to-1 margin over the course of the contest. The sophomore netminder made 36 saves during the 60 minutes of regulation play.

Hayden Lavigne, meanwhile, only faced 16 shots through regulation, as Michigan contained the Spartans’ offense for the majority of the evening.

The two rivals won’t have to wait long for a rematch; the Spartans and Wolverines play for the Iron D Trophy in their annual ‘Duel in the D’ game at the new Little Caesars Arena Saturday evening in Detroit.
