On Friday, the Grand Valley State University D2 team will host rival Davenport for a game at the Georgetown Ice Center.

Both teams will be competing for the same cause, however.

The two schools will be taking part in a benefit game to support the Dave Rue Scholarship Fund in memory of the beloved referee the hockey community lost to lung cancer last February.

The scholarship aims to give underprivileged kids the opportunity to officiate hockey through the Griffins Youth Foundation.

With the Dave Rue Scholarship, kids are able to go through USA Hockey training and have the equipment necessary to begin work as a referee.

At Friday’s game, there will be raffle prizes from local Grand Rapids businesses and a bake sale. Referees currently wearing the stripes because of the Dave Rue Scholarship will be in attendance and recognized before the game.

Grand Valley’s team will also be accepting donations at the game for the scholarship fund.
