Mel Pearson has landed another in-state commit.

Jake Gingell, a defenseman with the Youngstown Phantoms and a Gregory, Mich., native, has announced his commitment to the University of Michigan.

“I picked the University of Michigan because of the rich tradition of the university and its hockey program,” Gingell told MiHockey. “Education is a very important part of my life and it doesn’t get much better than the University of Michigan.”

Gingell, who is starting his second campaign with the Phantoms this season, was previously committed to Michigan Tech.

The product of Compuware and Victory Honda said he’s excited to play for his hometown team.

“Growing up as a kid only living 20 minutes from Ann Arbor I’ve always dreamed of an opportunity like this,” Gingell said. “The decision was a no-brainer for me. My dream is to one day win a NCAA hockey championship. I believe with the coaches and atmosphere of Michigan, it’s a realistic dream. And I will do everything I can to achieve that goal. I can’t wait to play in front of all my family and friends for the next four years.”

“Go Blue.”
