It hasn’t taken long for Red Savage to make an impact on the Michigan hockey scene.

After moving to the Great Lakes State in the fall of 2016, Savage won Silver Sticks and a MAHA state title with a talented Belle Tire bantam minor squad. The majority of those players have moved over to Compuware for the 2017-18 season.

Now, Savage is the first 2003 birth-year player to commit to a D1 program.

Savage has made a verbal commitment to Rico Blasi and the Miami RedHawks, joining his older brother Ryan, a Honeybaked alum and upcoming Fargo Force (USHL) forward.

“I picked Miami because it is not only a great school for hockey but it is also has a really good business program which I would like to enter,” Red Savage told MiHockey. “I have toured the campus many times because my older brother is also committed to the school.”

The Savages list their hometown as Scottsdale, Ariz. – Red lived there for the first 12 years of his life. When you’re the son of a NHLer, you tend to travel around a bit. Brian Savage, a Sudbury, Ont., native, chose the college route and played for the very same Miami RedHawks that both of his sons will soon play for; he skated in Ohio from 1990-93 before embarking on an NHL career that took he and his family first to Montreal, and then to Arizona.

The family ended up spending time in Salzburg, Austria, while Brian worked as a coach for EC Salzburg during the 2015-16 season. Then, it was one season in the Mitten. Ryan’s off to Fargo, while Red’s heading to Compuware with the majority of his Belle Tire teammates for the upcoming 2017-18 campaign.

The younger Savage says he looks forward to the day when he’s suiting up for games with the RedHawks.

“I am excited to play college hockey someday because it is the step to my ultimate goal of making the NHL,” he said. “I believe that Coach Blasi and coaching staff there will give me the chance to succeed in fulfilling my dreams.”
