The Vancouver Canucks have brought a Michigan native into their organization, the team announced today.

Jalen Chatfield has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the NHL club.

The 20-year-old native of Ypsilanti is currently a defenseman with the Windsor Spitfires; Chatfield joined the OHL franchise as a free agent in 2014 and has since suited up for 188 regular-season games for the ‘Spits over the last three seasons.

“Jalen is a good two-way defenceman that sees the ice well and makes good decisions in all three zones,” said Vancouver general manager Jim Benning in a release. “He moves the puck well and can join the rush. Jalen is another addition to our young prospect pool and we look forward to his continued development playing in Windsor.”

This season, Chatfield ranks third on the Windsor blueline with 28 points and eight goals.

Chatfield played two seasons for Belle Tire Midget Major before making the jump to the OHL; he was also a free-agent invite to the Red Wings’ prospect camp in previous summers.

Prior to Belle Tire, Chatfield played for Compuware and the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies.
