Charles Williams named Mike Richter Award semifinalist

Ten semifinalists were named for the Mike Richter Award on Thursday, and one Michigan native is among them.

Canton native Charles Williams is in the running for the award which honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men’s hockey. Williams, 24, spent the previous three seasons with Ferris State before coming over to Canisius College for his senior campaign. This year, he has posted a 19-6-5 record with a 1.83 goals-against average, .944 save percentage and five shutouts.

Williams was also already named the state of Michigan’s college MVP by College Hockey Inc.

The five finalists will be named March 23, with the ultimate winner coming on April 7 at the NCAA Frozen Four.

Candidates for the Mike Richter Award were determined by nominations from all 60 NCAA Division I men’s hockey head coaches. The semifinalists, finalists and winner are selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media.

Criteria for the Mike Richter Award:

  • Candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice
  • Candidates should be in good academic standing at an NCAA college or university
  • Consideration should be given to academic achievement and sportsmanship Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules; be full-time students at an NCAA college or university; and complete 50-percent or more of the season
  • Consideration should be given to the candidate’s activities in the community
