Making the jump to women’s Division 1 college hockey hasn’t been a problem for Abby Roque.

In fact, the Wisconsin Badgers’ freshman and Sault Ste. Marie native has thrived, as she was named the WCHA’s Rookie of the Year.

Roque, a forward, tallied eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points in 35 games in the 2016-17 campaign. She complemented those numbers with a plus-25 rating, good for third among all WCHA rookies.

Over the course of the season, Roque was also named WCHA Rookie of the Week three times and WCHA Rookie of the Month in November.

The Badgers are coming off a WCHA Final Face-Off championship win that saw them top Minnesota-Duluth, 4-1.

Roque formerly played high school hockey with the boys in Michigan as a member of the Sault High Blue Devils.
