While Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine and Zach Werenski have garnered the most attention as early Calder Trophy candidates, Tyler Motte has quietly been a productive player for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Perhaps not so quietly any more after the St. Clair native scored his third of the season in highlight-reel fashion Tuesday night in a 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

Just past the 12:00 mark of the third period, Motte bust down the right wing, took Flames defenseman T.J. Brodie wide, guarded the puck like a power forward as he drove the net, kicked the puck up to his stick and tucked it past netminder Brian Elliott. That put his Blackhawks up 3-1 at the time.

Motte made Chicago’s roster out of training camp after a 32-goal, 56-point campaign with the University of Michigan and a strong showing in the preseason. The 21-year-old forward now has five points in ten games for the Hawks this season as a rookie.
