After a solid 501-game career in the NHL, David Moss is hanging up the skates.

The 34-year-old Livonia native announced the news on Twitter Wednesday morning, taking time to thank family, friends and past coaches – including University of Michigan legend Red Berenson.

Moss spent eight seasons with the Calgary Flames from 2005-11 after being selected 220th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, including the 2008-09 campaign that saw him net 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points. While it was a career-high offensive season, Moss made his living primarily in a checking role, using his 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame to play a muck-and-grind type of game. Following the stint in Calgary, he then moved onto Phoenix/Arizona for three years before spending last season in Switzerland with Biel HC.

Moss is an alumnus of the Livonia Knights travel program and Detroit Catholic Central High School, where he played prior to joining the junior ranks and ultimately the Wolverines en route to the NHL. A four-year collegiate career in Ann Arbor saw him net 36 goals and 94 points.
