FSU’s Mayhew, Tech’s Redmond named WCHA players of the week

Two Michigan residents cracked this today’s WCHA players of the week list.

Ferris State forward Gerald Mayhew was named the league’s offensive player of the week, while Michigan Tech’s Angus Redmond earned top rookie honors.

Mayhew, a senior from Wyandotte, returned to the Bulldogs’ line-up this weekend after missing the previous four games due to injury. He made up for lost time, logging four points as FSU earned a split with then No. 9-ranked Minnesota State.

Mayhew, a captain for Ferris State this season, posted two goals on Saturday, including the game-winner with 1:01 remaining in regulation to give the Bulldogs their first win of the season.

He had posted two assists the previous night.

This marks Mayhew’s fifth career WCHA players of the week honor.

Meanwhile, Redmond stopped 48 of 49 shots for the Huskies over the weekend, leading Tech to a home-and-home sweep of rival Northern Michigan in his first two college starts.

A native of Langley, B.C., Redmond played 100 minutes between the pipes for MTU before giving up a single goal; he posted a shutout on Friday at home, then stopped 29 of 30 on the road on Saturday.
