The Marquette Electricians just issued a press release that they will no longer be an active midget major hockey program.

Marquette Junior Hockey President Jeff Cornock announced today that the 18U AAA midget major Marquette Electricians hockey team is ceasing operations, effective immediately.

The Electricians began play as a AAA program in the fall of 1986, and have produced players like Andy Roach, Jeff Finger, Mark Olver and Justin Florek.

According to the release, head coach Nate Taurence worked for the past four months to attract quality players from across the state, but “that quest was unsuccessful.”

“Coach Taurence went above and beyond in attempting to put a team on the ice,” said the Electricians’ operating committee chairman John Way in the release. “He has driven back and forth between Marquette and Detroit almost weekly since early June.”

The release also states that according to MAHA’s new regulations, Marquette will not be able to reform a AAA midget team in coming years without having AAA teams at all age levels (Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget 16U and 18U). The Electricians were grandfathered in when the rule changes were passed. Rules can change each year, however.
