Today, a Michigan hockey youth player is having surgery to amputate his leg.

His family, however, wants to make sure the White Lake native can keep playing the sports he loves despite his life-changing event.

Spencer Hale, a goaltender who led the USA Eagles to a 14U Tier II national championship last year, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that appeared within his knee. After he didn’t respond to chemotherapy, it was decided that he needed to have his leg amputated.

That surgery is taking place today. Meanwhile, his aunt has started a GoFundMe page for Spencer to raise funds for a fully functional prosthetic that will let him continue pursuing athletic activities.

The GoFundMe page can be found right here. The Hale family has already raised more than $12,000, with a goal to raise $20,000.

Thanks to everyone in the hockey community already supporting Spencer – hopefully more do so after reading this article.
