Weekend Rewind: How Michigan’s D1 college programs fared over the weekend

Ferris State sweeps Alaska-Anchorage

Ferris State won both this weekend’s games against Alaska-Anchorage – 4-2 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday. Both games were comparatively high-shooting games, totaling 68 and 71 shots, respectively. Friday’s game also saw an astounding 53 minutes worth of penalties between both teams. Justin Buzzeo, Kenny Babinski, Jared VanWormer and Gerald Mayhew scored for Ferris State, while Jordan Kwas and Andrew Pettitt scored for Alaska-Anchorage. On Saturday, Ferris State came out of the corner swinging, putting three goals on the scoreboard in the first period. Alaska-Anchorage fought their way back into the game, even managing to bring the game to within one goal just 14 seconds into the third. They couldn’t tally another, however; Ferris State sealed the game with an empty-netter from Chad McDonald.

Michigan splits with Penn State

Michigan faced Penn State this weekend, with each team winning one bout. On Friday, Michigan held two different leads over the Nittany Lions, only to watch Penn State force overtime and win 5-4 in the extra session. On Saturday, the tables were turned, as Michigan trounced Penn State 5-2. The Wolverines nearly doubled Penn State’s shot total, firing 39 and only allowing 20. Alex Kile and Phil Di Giuseppe both notched two goals for Michigan, with Di Giuseppe netting the game-winning goal, as well as an empty-net goal at the end of the third period.

Michigan State loses two straight to Wisconsin

Michigan State traveled to Wisconsin this weekend, but failed to win either of their back-to-back games. Friday saw a 5-2 win for Wisconsin, with Michael Mersch netting two goals and an assist. Nic Kerdiles also had a three-point night, assisting on both goals from Mersch, as well as netting an empty-netter. On Saturday, Wisconsin won a much lower scoring game, 2-0, with each team serving 18 minutes worth of penalties over the course of 60 minutes. Joseph LaBate scored 7:17 into the first period, with Mersch tallying the second goal of the game early in the second.

Western Michigan wins one, loses one vs. Nebraska-Omaha

Western Michigan faced University of Nebraska-Omaha at home on Friday and Saturday, splitting wins with their guests. On Friday, Nebraska-Omaha claimed a 5-1 win over Western Michigan, thanks to a three-goal third period. Josh Archibal, Austin Ortega and Jake Guentzel notched the third-period goals, securing the win for UNO. On Saturday, it was Western Michigan’s turn for third-period heroics. Western scored four in the third period to fend of Nebraska and secure a 5-3 victory. Chase Balisy had a goal and two assists in the third, and Nolan LaPorte, Colton Hargrove and Shane Berschbach contributed the other three goals.

Lake Superior State sweeps Alabama-Huntsville

LSSU won both their games against Alabama-Huntsville this weekend. Lake Superior State managed to score only two goals against Alabama-Huntsville despite peppering goaltender Matt Larose with 44 shots in the contest Friday. Alabama-Huntsville only tallied 23 shots on goal, however. Stephen Perfetto and Colin Campbell accounted for LSSU’s goals, while Brandon Carlson scored the lone Alabama goal of the game. On Saturday the game remained tied after two periods, but thanks to a Dan Radke goal in the third, Lake Superior State got the win.

Michigan Tech wins twice against Northern Michigan

Michigan Tech improved its record to 14-16-6 after two wins against Northern Michigan this weekend. Reid Sturos recorded a hat trick for Michigan Tech on Friday’s 7-4 win over NMU. Sturos also notched an assist on top of his three goals. On Saturday Michigan Tech won 3-2 despite being heavily outshot, 39-21 in favor of Northern Michigan. The game was tied after two periods, but would not remain that way, due to Tanner Kero’s game-winning goal that came just 4:49 into the third.
