There was both good and bad news for Swedish hockey fans and Michigan hockey fans alike today, as a Red Wing scored a game-winning goal to clinch their spot in the quarterfinals, and a Red Wing went home early.

Daniel Alfredsson scored on a rebound at the 12:39 mark of the third period to give Team Sweden a 1-0 victory over Switzerland today, clinching a spot in the quarters for his squad. However, Alfredsson had to accomplish that feat without his Red Wings teammate and fellow countryman Henrik Zetterberg, who had to remove himself from the Olympic Games due to his back problems.

The Swedes weren’t the only team to pick up a win on Friday; Canada, Finland and the Czech Republic all recorded victories, as well. Canada recorded a 6-0 shutout over Austria, Finland beat Norway 6-1, and the Czechs beat Latvia 4-2.
