Shaved Ice – August 5

Welcome back to work.

Multiple news outlets are reporting that former Red Wings great and current Red Wings employee Chris Chelios will be an analyst for the new Fox Sports 1 channel, which launches later this month. Chelios, 51, will be an analyst both for NHL games and the Olympics.

Speaking of Red Wings defensemen, our Dave Waddell writes this week that Detroit doesn’t need to worry about their blue line anymore.

We were at the University of Michigan alumni game last Friday – check out the recap right here.

Two Honeybaked standouts have been invited to the girls’ National U18 evaluation camp.

Team USA dropped their first game of the Ivan Hlinka tournament today, falling to Finland 3-2 in overtime.

More U.S. game at the National Junior Evaluation Camp start shortly. Yesterday, Team Blue lost to Finland 6-5 in overtime, while Team White lost to Sweden 4-2. It should be worth noting that the Americans are spreading their top talent across two different squads for these contests.

Because, well, we kind of miss watching hockey every night.

It’s been a quarter-century since Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Oilers to the Kings – forever changing hockey in the process. Check out TSN’s features on the historic moment right here.

Jay Bouwmeester, a player many thought might land in Detroit during the trade deadline, has signed a five-year extension with the St. Louis Blues worth $27 million.

Mark Messier is working with Bauer and Hockey Canada to help grow the game up north; even in Canada, hockey’s participation isn’t what it once was. It’s something we should certainly pay attention to in the States, and evaluate what we can do to help grow the game in our own borders at the same time.

Oh, you know, just waiting for a bag to show up after a flight…

We mentioned the University of Michigan alumni game recap, but we’ve also got quite the photo gallery. Click here to check it out.
