Shaved Ice – July 11

Shaved Ice is back for a Thursday edition.

The Red Wings are hosting their annual development camp this year, with Day 2 just getting underway in Traverse City. We have staff Nick Barnowski out there right now, and more Team MiHockey help coming shortly. Here are the two articles we posted from Day 1 of the camp (click on the image to read more):

Darren Helm talked about his return to the ice and the frustrations of battling multiple injuries over the last few seasons.

The Red Wings are impressed with their latest crop of defensive prospects.

And in other news…

The Plymouth Whalers have secured a commitment from forward Connor Chatham, a 2011 pick of the OHL club.

This report from a Montreal publication indicates that Mike McCarron will soon be making his decision on where to play next season. McCarron, a Macomb native, was Montreal’s first-round pick, and is committed to Western Michigan, though reports have indicated that he may be heading to the OHL’s London Knights instead. We’ll be keeping our eyes out for any news.

The MWJHL has added a team in Walker, Mich. – the West Michigan Freeze will be the AAU junior league’s eighth member club for the 2013-14 season.

Trevor Nill is moving from player to coach, as the former Spartan has joined the Muskegon Lumberjacks to be their new assistant coach.

Former Red Wings’ greats Brendan Shanahan and Chris Chelios have been tabbed as the next group of players to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Grand Rapids Griffins are taking fans back through their journey to an AHL championship with a summer series of their popular ‘Between the Benches’ video segments. Here’s the first episode.

David Perron has been traded to the Oilers in exchange for Magnus Paajarvi and a second-round pick. He will bring a scoring touch to a team already loaded with talent, but he might bring a little experience to a locker room that needs it, too.

Tuukka Rask has signed an eight-year extension with the Bruins, and the Original Six club has also added veteran forward Jarome Iginla just a few months after he decided the Penguins would give him a better chance for a Cup ring.

Former Wolverines star Carl Hagelin has re-signed with the Rangers.

Twenty-one NHLers have filed for arbitration, including the Red Wings’ Brendan Smith. Alec Martinez and Erik Condra have, as well.
