After spending 17 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, forward Daniel Alfredsson has decided to continue his career with the Detroit Red Wings.

The 40-year-old forward has signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings, marking the beginning of what could be a very busy day for general manager Ken Holland and his staff.

NHL general managers were able to start contacting players on Wednesday, per new league rules. Teams were not able to start signing players until Friday at noon, however.

Alfredsson scored 10 goals along with 16 assists in 47 games this past season with Ottawa. He is joining a Red Wings team full of Swedish born players, including captain Henrik Zetterberg, and the two could potentially play on the same line this upcoming season.

Alfredsson has tallied 1108 points in 1178 games throughout his storied career. He won gold – along with Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom, Mikael Samuelsson and Henrik Zetterberg – with Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

He won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year
