Shaved Ice – June 27

Both the Red Wings and Griffins are getting us fired up for 2013-14.a

The Red Wings announced the roster and schedule for their annual development camp today. Darren Helm headlines the list of participants. Click here for more information.

With 14 forwards still under contract, along with unrestricted free agents Valtteri Filppula, Daniel Cleary and Damien Brunner, the Red Wings plan on making moves via trades and buyouts. Click here to see the details. It’s expected that the Wings will try to trade forwards Jordin Tootoo and Cory Emmerton and defensemen Carlo Colaiacovo, although Tootoo and/or Colaiacovo could be bought out. Forwards Mikael Samuelsson (one year, $3 million) and Todd Bertuzzi (one year, $2.075 million) are also on the radar for buy-outs.

Gregg Krupa talks about the upcoming draft and the new responsibilities for Joe McDonnell, who will have to try to fill the void left by Jim Nill.

The Ontario Hockey League released their schedule today. The Saginaw Spirit open on Sept. 19 in Barrie, while the Plymouth Whalers open on Sept. 20 in London. Click here to see the full schedule.

As we continue to prepare for the NHL Draft, we look back on this moment…

Captain Vincent Lecavalier will put on a new sweater for the first time in 15 years to start next year’s season.  The Tampa Bay Lightning have decided to use one of their two compliance buy-outs on Lecavalier’s contract.  Tampa Bay will be paying the veteran forward two-thirds of the contract’s existing value across twice the term of the contract.

In the latest episode of the Philly goaltending drama, the club is going to buy out Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract.  The Flyers have also decided to buy out Danny Briere’s final two seasons of the eight-year contract he signed back in 2006.

Will Kris Letang remain a Penguin?  Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and James Neal account for $23 million of the teams cap space, leaving little room for Letang.  Letang’s contract ends at the end of next season and if traded, would prefer being dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Nathan MacKinnon tops Bob McKenzie’s final draft projections. Plymouth Whalers star and NTDP alum Ryan Hartman checks in at No. 26.

Brent Sutter has returned to Team Canada, as he will be the bench boss for their national junior team.

Patrice Bergeron has been treated for a punctured lung at a local hospital.
