Compuware defenseman Sean Day officially approved for “exceptional player” status to enter OHL Draft early

The Ontario Hockey Federation officially announced today that Compuware defenseman Sean Day has been granted “exceptional player” status and will be allowed to enter the OHL Draft one birth-year early.

An evaluation process by Hockey Canada, with a ‘special evaluation panel’ asseembled to evaluate Day both on hockey and academics to “assess his level of maturity” before reaching their decision.

Day, born on Jan. 9, 1998, will be eligible for the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection on Saturday, April 6.

“Sean Day should be very proud of himself in attaining exceptional player status,” said Ontario Hockey Federation executive director Phillip McKee in a press release.  “The evaluation process is very extensive and reviews all aspects of the player’s life.  We all look forward to seeing Sean continue his development as a player and person in the OHL next season.”

The talented defenseman was born in Leuven, Belgium, but is officially a Canadian citizen. He currently lives in Rochester with his family, and has grown up playing minor hockey in metro Detroit. With the Compuware Midget Minor squad this season, Day has recorded 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points in 63 games, with a +47 rating. He is listed at 6-foot-2 and 197 pounds. Last summer, Day also won a North American Roller Hockey Championship title with Honeybaked in the Bantam Division.

Day is the fourth player to be granted the “exceptional player” status to enter the OHL Draft early. He joins Connor McDavid, Aaron Ekblad and John Tavares on the prestigious list.
