Shaved Ice – Jan. 4

The weekend is here! Hope you’re ready for it.

After taking out rival Canada, Team USA is will be playing for gold at the World Juniors tomorrow morning. We will be living-tweeting the game, just like we did for the semifinal win yesterday morning. The Americans will take on Sweden, with puck drop slated for 8 a.m. Eastern time.

Today’s Michi-gamer nod goes to Ann Arbor native Austin Watson, who had the game-winner in his AHL contest last night.

New Hudson native Kyle Lawson, a former NTDP and Notre Dame player, was named the new director of education and recruitment for College Hockey, Inc. yesterday. Lawson will work out of the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Speaking of college hockey, here are the match-ups this weekend:

  • Michigan vs. the NTDP U18 team (today)
  • Union at Lake Superior (today and tomorrow)
  • Northern Michigan at St. Cloud State (today and tomorrow)
  • Western Michigan at Bemidji State (today and tomorrow)
  • Michigan State at Ferris State (tomorrow)

Check out the latest edition of Spartan Hockey All Access, which is focused on the community outreach programs that the Michigan State hockey team works on season after season. We could put highlights in here, but stories like this are so much better.

A federal mediator is coming back to the NHL/NHLPA discussions today, which hopefully will keep things moving in the right direction. They’re running out of time to save the season; hopefully we can still see the excitement and energy of the NHL playoffs this year.

Canada and Russia will compete for bronze before the U.S. and Sweden plays for gold later tomorrow, and the Canadians will be switching goaltenders.

A political party in Canada is discussing the possibility of lottery games built around the Flames and Oilers, designed to fund new buildings for both of the Alberta teams.

We have compiled all of the MiHockey Instagram photos in one gallery, check it out by clicking here or clicking on the image below. It’s almost like a look back on the last year, through photos.

Hope everybody has a great weekend. We’ll be at Yost tonight and then watching the World Junior championship tomorrow morning. Go USA!
