Welcome to the first Shaved Ice of 2013!

Team USA took care of business against the Czech Republic today in the quarterfinals of the World Juniors, securing their spot in the semifinals for a rematch with Team Canada.

Two Michigan natives were given one-game suspensions by the CCHA today. Wolverines forward A.J. Treais and Broncos defenseman Matt Stewart both landed suspensions from the league after illegal hits in the Great Lakes Invitational.

Two Ferris State Bulldogs landed on the CCHA Players of the Week list.

Dan Cleary told the Free Press that he is ‘hopeful’ as the deadline for saving the NHL season nears.

The Harlem Globetrotters are going to play a game on ice in Portage on Monday, as a way to entertain hockey-deprived fans. I don’t think that’s going to do the trick, but hopefully they have some fun.

The players and owners have wrapped up one meeting, but they are expected to have another later today. Boy, oh boy, do I hope these meetings are going well. The NHLPA gave their response to the latest NHL proposal, and now the league will be reviewing.

Russia almost got knocked out of the World Juniors today, but the host country rallied to beat Switzerland in a shootout. They will take on Sweden in the semifinals.

Jordan Eberle was named AHL Player of the Month – though he should be playing in the NHL right now.

ESPN’s Craig Custance, a Michigan native, weighs in on a holiday season that was supposed to feature plenty of outdoor hockey in Detroit and Ann Arbor.
