Happy Thursday, everyone.

Tonight the Red Wings host a special 7 p.m. practice at Joe Louis Arena, with an open skate held for the fans at the conclusion of the event. Are you going down to the Joe? We are.

Last night Plymouth Whalers forward Ryan Hartman caught the attention of another top prospect at the Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game; Nathan MacKinnon said he didn’t know how well Hartman could throw his weight around on the ice. Hartman had the first ‘big hit’ of the contest, and he dropped the gloves with Kerby Rychel during the all-star event.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press says that Johan Franzen will need to pull his weight this season for the Red Wings to have success. After all, Franzen eats up a hefty hunk of the Wings’ salary-cap allotment.

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News writes that Patrick Eaves has been all smiles since his return to NHL action. Been great to see Eaves back on the ice – it’s been quite a while. He’s a great player and a great guy to talk to.

The Griffins fell 1-0 to the Charlotte Checkers last night. Grand Rapids held the opposition to only 16 shots on goal, but none of their 28 could tie it up before the final buzzer rang.
