Shaved Ice – Jan. 14

The Red Wings are back, the Red Wings are back.

We’ve been living at Compuware for the last few days (hence the blog showing up a little later than usual). That means plenty of photos for everybody who wasn’t fortunate enough to make it down to the Whalers’ home to see the Red Wings in action. Click here for Day 1 of training camp, and click here for Day 2. There’s gotta be like 80 photos between the two, so hopefully you see one or two in there that you actually like.

The process of winning the fans back is under way, as well, and we chatted with some of the people who attended the first day of training camp to hear what their thoughts were on the subject.

Everyone’s favorite Muskegon native-turned Spartan-turned Red Wings (we’re talking about Justin Abdelkader) says he’s ready for the season to get going, and that the pace of training camp will have the Wings ready for their Jan. 19 season opener.

Speaking of Spartans, Michigan State had a big win over Notre Dame Saturday night – click here to see our recap from East Lansing. Because of his play between the pipes, MSU goaltender Jake Hildebrand is our Michi-gamer for the weekend. Hildebrand also picked up a CCHA goalie of the week award this afternoon; Western Michigan’s Kenney Morrison was named rookie of the week, as well.

Western Michigan remains the top Michigan-based team in the latest USCHO poll – click here to see who else made the cut, and how we voted.

Meanwhile, it was a rough outing for the Michigan Wolverines this weekend, as they dropped both games to Alaska – the first time the Nanooks have ever swept the Wolverines.

Let the trades begin. Edmonton acquired defenseman Mark Fistric from the Dallas Stars today – I don’t think Red Wings fans should be too thrilled about the Oilers adding even more depth to their line-up. The Hurricanes have made some moves, too.

Oxford native Jason DeSantis is on his way to Montreal after the Canadiens completed a trade with the Panthers.

Speaking of the Canadiens – the Original 6 club has told Scott Gomez that his services are no longer needed. Considering there are websites dedicated to charting his last goal, it’s not hard to figure out why.

ESPN lists seven goalies to keep an eye on this year – no Jimmy Howard sightings on the page.

The Hockey News reports that only about 100 people showed up to watch the Coyotes’ first workout. Surprise, surprise…

While the NHL is back, it’s important that nobody forgets about the hockey that got us through the dark ages. Also, I’m urging everybody to stop using the phrase “hockey is back”. Click on the image below to read the first post of my new blog, where I tackle that frustrating phrase/hashtag, that’s insulting to the rest of hockey.

See everybody tomorrow…if you’re going to Compuware, send us some pics!
