The second day of the Great Lakes Invitational featured physical play in both games, and now two of the participating players are paying for it.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today that Michigan captain and senior forward A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills) has been suspended for one game, as has Western Michigan defenseman Matt Stewart (Brighton).

Treais made contact with Matt DeBlouw’s head during the Wolverines’ win against Michigan State in the third-place game of the GLI Sunday afternoon. From the CCHA:

Senior forward A.J. Treais of the University of Michigan has been suspended for one (1) game. The action was taken by the league after a review of an incident that occurred near the 17:28 mark of the third period in a game against Michigan State and resulted in the player receiving major and game misconduct penalties for Contact to the Head.

Treais will have to miss Michigan’s next regular-season game, which is on Jan. 8 against Bowling Green. He will be able to play in the Wolverines’ exhibition game against the NTDP this Friday.

Stewart was suspended for a hit from behind in the closing moments of Western Michigan’s loss to Michigan Tech in the GLI championship game Sunday evening. From the CCHA:

Sophomore defenseman Matt Stewart of Western Michigan University has been suspended for one (1) game. The action was taken by the league after a review of an incident that occurred around the 19:29 mark of the third period in a game against Michigan Tech and resulted in the player receiving major and disqualification penalties for Hitting from Behind.

Stewart will miss both of Western Michigan’s games at Bemidji State this weekend – one game for the initial disqualification penalty, plus one more game from the supplemental discipline just distributed by the CCHA. He can return to the line-up on Jan. 11, when the Broncos host Lake Superior.
