Shaved Ice – December 7

Outlook for NHL hockey this season continues to get worse and worse.

Yesterday evening, talks broke off between the owners and the players, as the NHL rejected an offer from the NHLPA. Gary Bettman said optimism disappeared Wednesday, after the owners thought they were making progress.

From the TSN article:

“This looks like it’s not going to be resolved in the immediate future,” Fehr said in response to the NHL’s rejection. Fehr went on to say that he doesn’t know when the two sides will meet again.

We’ll have more on that…garbage…later on in the blog. Now to happier news.

Check out our latest feature on Michigan State, starring freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand. The young netminder is playing so well the coaching staff can’t justify putting incumbent starter Will Yanakeff back in.

Whalers defenseman Connor Carrick says his adjustment period to OHL hockey is over – now he’s ready to be a leader on the team. Speaking of the Whalers, they’re hosting in-state rival Saginaw tonight. We’ll be in attendance.

And the college match-ups we’re watching this weekend:

  • Ferris State at Western Michigan
  • Michigan State at Notre Dame
  • Lake Superior at Miami
Tomorrow is also the ‘Rock Out The Lockout’ charity game in Windsor. Will you be attending? Tweet us your photos!

Check out this video from Henrik Zetterberg’s Warrior Hockey photo and video shoot. We went behind-the-scenes of the shoot and wrote an article about it – here’s one of the final products from Warrior and Stack.com.

NHL players are voicing their frustrations on Twitter – here are some of the comments.

The league’s official site shared some of the statements released by the owners who met privately with the players throughout the week – the ones everyone thought would pull the league out of the lockout.

Ryan O’Reilly of the Avalanche has reportedly signed not a one-year deal but a two-year deal with a KHL team. Not good news after one of the most disappointing nights yet during this lockout.

And we’ll end the ‘Outside the Mitten’ segment with this:

And here we have Shawn Thornton narrating “The Night Before Christmas.” Thought everybody could use some holiday cheer today.

We’ll be here all night (and all weekend) to keep you updated on all things hockey in Michigan and beyond. That’s what we do, after all.
