Shaved Ice – Dec. 31

What a weekend…

It was a wild weekend at Joe Louis Arena – we hope you enjoyed the latest installment of the Great Lakes Invitational. Michigan Tech won the prestigious tournament for the first time since Mel Pearson was a player on the roster and not a coach. A lot of that had to do with freshman goaltender Pheonix Copley, who stopped all 70 shots he faced over the weekend. The Alaska native was named tournament MVP for his performance, and we named him our Michi-gamer this morning.

We posted photo galleries for all four games played over the weekend; click on the match-up below to see all the shots.

In other college hockey news, Ferris State posted a 6-2 win over Minnesota Duluth Saturday night, after falling to Cornell in their first game of the Florida College Hockey Classic.

See how Michigan’s teams fared in the latest college hockey poll right here.

Team USA has advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Juniors after beating Slovakia today, by an impressive score of 9-3.

Former Spartan Mike Ratchuk’s recent shootout goal is making the rounds on social media…check it out right here:

Canada beat Russia 4-1 today in World Juniors play, which means they get to jump to the front of the line and skip the quarterfinals. Team USA and Russia will be the two teams from Group B that have to play quarterfinals games to try to advance one step closer to gold in the international tournament. The Czech Republic and Sweden both recorded wins, as well.

The league and the players union are meeting for the first time since Dec. 13 today to go over the NHL’s latest proposal.  I’d rather celebrate the return of NHL hockey than the New Year, to be honest.

The countdown is on for the Oilers and the city of Edmonton to figure something out in regards to new building, or the NHL team might be on the move.

ESPN talks about five Winter Classic match-ups they want to see in future seasons; what would you want to see? I want Red Wings vs. Penguins at a neutral site between the two teams.

Please stay safe and have some fun tonight as we welcome in the New Year. We’ll have a Shaved Ice for you on Jan. 2. Happy holidays!
