Shaved Ice – Dec. 28

Great Lakes Invitational starts tomorrow!

After topping Germany 8-0 yesterday, Team USA took on Russia this morning at the World Juniors, only to fall to the host country 2-1. Rochester native and Wolverines defenseman Jacob Trouba had the game-tying goal in the second period, but it was the only goal the Americans would score in the contest.

Here’s our recap from yesterday, as well – eight different U.S. players scored in the lopsided win.

We posted our top 10 moments of 2012 for the Grand Rapids Griffins last night – read through the list right here.

There is a new offer on the table from the NHL, as reported by ESPN.com this morning. Interesting stuff – wonder if it’s just the latest PR stunt though.

The Great Lakes Invitational starts tomorrow. It’s an All-Michigan line-up this year, which certainly works for us. Here’s the Saturday match-ups (all games on FSD):

  • Western Michigan vs. Michigan State – 3:35 p.m.
  • Michigan vs. Michigan Tech – 7:35 p.m.

In case you missed it yesterday, we’re sharing it again – check out our video from the high school hockey games at The Joe last week.

The latest proposal from the NHL, as mentioned earlier, includes provisions for a six-year contract length for players (seven if re-signing a player), year-to-year salary variance moves from five percent to ten percent and that each team gets one compliance buy-out that will not count against the cap for the 2013-14 season. Here’s the link again if you want to check it out.

Canada rallied to beat Slovakia 6-3 today at the World Juniors, and they did it with only 10 forwards; J.C. Lipon and Anthony Camara both got five-minute majors and game misconducts for questionable hits.

In other WJC games, Sweden topped Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout, and the Czech Republic beat Finland 3-1.

The city of Glendale signed an arena management contract and lease with potential Coyotes owner Greg Jamison, moving everything one step closer to making sure the team stays in Phoenix.

The Spartans are practicing at Suburban Ice Macomb today, and you get to meet the team after they’re done. Click here for our link on the event, or follow the graphic below.

See you all weekend for the Great Lakes Invitational. Can’t wait!
