Have a feeling this is going to be a Green vs. Blue-themed edition of Shaved Ice…

It’s rivalry week for those who bleed blue or bleed green in this state. The Wolverines and the Spartans kick off their 2012-13 chapter of a bitter in-state rivalry. We’ll be there for both games – and are excited to see how both games play out. As a refresher, tonight the two teams clash at Yost (puck drop is 7:30 p.m.). Then, they both head up to Munn for a rematch tomorrow night (7 p.m. puck drop).

The Wolverines will be focused on making less mistakes than their rivals, and trying to capitalize on special-teams play.

Meanwhile, a young Spartans squad is excited to to experience the energy such a heated contest will bring.

While a lot of eyes will be fixed on this series this weekend, there’s plenty more hockey to watch in our great state. Here are some of the other match-ups we’ll be following:

  • Bowling Green at Western Michigan
  • Ferris State at Lake Superior
  • Northern Michigan at Miami
  • Notre Dame at Boston College (not Michigan, but that will be some great hockey)
  • Windsor at Plymouth
  • Saginaw at Belleville

There’s been some optimism surrounding the labor talks recently. We’ll let you be the judge of that after you read Donald Fehr’s most recent note to his players, obtained by TSN and posted right here.

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN says that both sides have avoided a meltdown during their discussions…perhaps that’s a good sign?

Meanwhile, LeBrun’s colleague Scott Burnside asks why Fred Shero hasn’t been elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame yet.

Here’s the video from Jacob Trouba’s questionable hit from last week at Northern Michigan. Not going to weigh in on it, just going to post it so you can decide for yourself.

Legal or not legal, it certainly serves a warning for players of all ages to keep your head up while flying through the neutral zone (or anywhere on the ice, for that matter).
