Shaved Ice – November 5

Welcome back to the work week, everyone. Don’t forget to vote tomorrow!

Western Michigan and Notre Dame treated college hockey fans to a Sunday night battle yesterday, but it didn’t go too well for the Broncos – they lost 4-0 to the Fighting Irish in South Bend.

Here’s a look at how the Michigan-based NCAA D1 teams did on Friday and on Saturday. We covered the Spartans’ game on Friday, and the Wolverines’ game on Saturday, and yes, we might have been bad luck…unless you’re a Wildcats fan.

The Griffins picked up back-to-back wins this weekend, thanks to the play of Petr Mrazek.

I’m sure you’re well-aware by now that the NHL has canceled the Winter Classic, and canceled the Hockeytown Winter Festival at the same time. The Red Wings announced on Friday how they are dealing with the tickets and scheduling situations due to the changes, see the breakdown right here.

The Whalers made a third-period bid at a comeback, but fell to Sarnia 7-5 Saturday at Compuware. Congrats to rookie Zach Bratina, however, who picked up his first OHL goal. Sarnia then stopped by Saginaw the next night, and recorded another win.

Speaking of the Whalers, Jeremy Smith is our Michi-gamer of the weekend. Click here to find out why.

Speaking of Mrazek, here’s his prospect profile from my friends at Red Wings TV.

The assistant captains for the two sides of the CBA battle – Bill Daly and Steve Fehr – held a lengthy meeting Saturday. Reports say that it lasted until 1 a.m. I would be happier if it turned into a slumber party. You know, I bet they could have gotten everything straightened out over some popcorn and a slapstick comedy playing in the TV at around 3 or 4 in the morning.

A legal analyst for TSN says that NHL players could legitimately be fired by their team if they get hurt playing overseas during the lockout. Wonder if the players are aware of that, or if they care.

Here’s an article from ESPN about former Red Wing Adam Oates, who will be entering the Hockey Hall of Fame soon.

The U.S. team lost their lone exhibition game in the World Junior A Challenge on Saturday. The tournament gets underway today.

It’s rivalry week. Time to get ready for another clash between the Spartans and Wolverines.

See everyone tomorrow.
