Saturday college recaps: Spartans, Bulldogs win in regulation, Broncos win shootout

A look at how the Michigan-based NCAA D-1 teams fared Saturday night.

Spartans rout Wolverines in East Lansing

The line of Matt Berry, Brent Darnell, and Matt DeBlouw recorded a combined five goals and five assists Saturday night in East Lansing, as the Spartans coasted to a 7-2 win over their in-state rivals the Michigan Wolverines. Anthony Hayes and Kevin Walrod also scored for Michigan State, while freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand had 40 saves in goal. Cristoval “Boo” Nieves and A.J. Treais scored for UM, while another freshman goaltender, Jared Rutledge, stopped 20 shots in the loss.

Bulldogs’ first period enough to best Lakers

Justin DeMartino and Cory Kane scored in the first period Saturday night, and that turned out to be all the scoring the Bulldogs would need. Ferris State held onto the lead, largely because of C.J. Motte’s 43 saves between the pipes, as they picked up a 2-1 win over Lake Superior State on the road. Zach Sternberg scored the lone goal for LSSU, while goaltender Kevin Murdock stopped 26 shots.

Broncos and Bowling Green play to regulation tie, but WMU prevails in shootout

Shae Berschbach and Dennis Brown scored in a shootout Saturday night to help the Broncos earn an extra point in the CCHA standings. The Broncos and the Falcons played to a 2-2 tie in regulation. Berschbach and Kenny Morrison scored the official goals for WMU, while Frank Slubowski stopped 23 shots on the night.

Wildcats battle to regulation tie with Miami, but lose in shootout

Stephan Viger and Ryan Kesti scored for the Wildcats Saturday night, in a 2-2 game that needed more than 60 minutes to decide a winner. Jared Coreau stopped 31 of the 33 shots he saw in regulation, but was unable to stop the RedHawks in the shootout. Washington, Mich., native Austin Czarnik had one of the shootout goals for Miami.
