Friday college recaps: Wolverines, Broncos, Lakers post series-opening wins

Three Michigan-based NCAA D-1 programs posted wins Friday night.

Wolverines post impressive 5-1 win over Spartans

Lindsay Sparks and Cristoval Nieves scored for the Wolverines in the opening period, while Derek DeBlois, Kevin Lynch and Jacob Trouba struck in the third en route to Michigan’s fourth win of the season and first of the season over their in-state rivals. Freshman goaltender Jared Rutledge stopped 28 shots for Michigan. Kevin Walrod scored the lone goal for Michigan State, while Will Yanakeff made 29 saves in the loss. Broncos take out BGSU

A goal and an assist from both Chase Balisy and Dane Walters were enough for Western Michigan to power past Bowling Green in their Friday night series opener. Balisy’s goal – credited as the game-winner – was a shorthanded strike early in the second period. Kenny Morrison added the Broncos’ final goal, while Frank Slubowski only had to turn aside 11 shots to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Second-period surge leads Lakers past Bulldogs

Sometimes one minute of play can change the entire outlook of a hockey game. Last night, the Lake State Lakers were down 1-0 heading into the final minute of the second period in their game against Ferris State. When they headed to the locker room for the second intermission, they held a 3-1 lead. A goal by Kellan Lain and then back-to-back strikes by Buddy Robinson gave the Lakers three goals in 57 seconds, and they coasted to a 4-1 home win. Nick McParland added an empty-netter in the third, and Kevin Murdock picked up his third win of the season between the pipes after stopping 31 shots. Ferris State’s Justin DeMartino had the game’s first goal, and the only for the Bulldogs. C.J. Motte had 23 saves in the loss.

RedHawks top Wildcats in Oxford

Michigan natives Austin Czarnik and Riley Barber continue lighting up the scoresheet for the Miami RedHawks, and this time, the Northern Michigan Wildcats were the victims. Both Czarnik, a sophomore from Washington, and Barber, a freshman from Livonia, had a goal and two assists for the RedHawks, as they cruised to a 5-2 home win over the Wildcats. DJ Vandercook and CJ Ludwig had the goals for Northern, while Jared Coreau and Michael Doan split time between the pipes for a combined 31 saves in the loss.
