Shaved Ice – October 9

MiHockey’s Michael Caples here with you on a Tuesday to talk some hockey.

Terrible news for Hockeytown today, as WXYZ Detroit reported that the longtime voice of the Red Wings, hall-of-famer Budd Lynch, passed away at age 95. Lynch was a tremendous, tremendous person who couldn’t help but light up the Joe Louis Arena press box. It was a pleasure hearing him over The Joe’s speakers for all those years. Thanks for all you did for hockey in our state, Budd. You sure will be missed.

I was at the Michigan State exhibition opener last night that saw the Spartans post a 6-1 win over Windsor. Check out the recap right here.

Muskegon Lumberjacks goaltender Kevin Lindskoug was named USHL goaltender of the week.

Shawn Hunwick is our Michi-gamer of the night. See what he did by clicking this link.

Red Wings TV talks with Red Berenson and Luke Glendening in their prospects report, and takes you inside Yost Ice Arena. Check it out.

Tampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman (yep, I’m putting this in ‘Outside the Mitten’ and labeling it this way) took part in a Q&A with NHL.com. Always nice to hear some thoughts from No. 19.

Dominik Hasek is finally hanging ’em up. After all, he is 47 years old. Don’t know how the slinky-for-a-spine thing works at that age.

The two sides of the NHL bickering are talking, but not about the economic or system issues. I would love to hear what they are talking about instead. Perhaps about Al Alburquerque’s kissing of a baseball during a rather-important play?

Kevin Porter – former Wolverines star, Hobey Baker winner, and Northville native – was just named captain of the AHL’s Rochester Americans. Ironically, he was our most recent “Hometown Hero” in the magazine.

Back to Yost tonight. Rumor has it the Wolverines are kicking their season off against Windsor.
