Shaved Ice – September 7

Welcome back to Shaved Ice, where we round up everything you might want to know about…hockey-wise, at least. MiHockey editor Michael Caples here with you on a Friday morning.

Quick hits

Did you see our article about Jonas Gustavsson yesterday? New Red Wings netminder seems to be adjusting well to life in Hockeytown.

Members of the Red Wings talked to the Free Press’ Helene St. James about their potential plans if there’s a lockout.

Patrick Eaves is still unsure of a return to hockey; he told DetNews writer Ted Kulfan that the experience has been “miserable.”

Highlight reel

Bauer’s latest top-of-the-line skate, the Nexus 1000, hits stores today. Here’s Livonia native and Canucks star Ryan Kesler talking about his new wheels.

Outside the Mitten

Sounds like Shane Doan will stay in Phoenix, provided the sale of the team goes according to plan. You have to admire the loyalty to the organization, but at the same time, I’m left wondering why he wouldn’t want to increase his chances at a Stanley Cup by signing with a proven winner.

Alex Ovechkin told NHL.com that he’s changed his approach to working out over the off-season. He’s also sporting a new haircut. I don’t know if either of the changes will help him in the postseason, though.

TSN’s Darren Dreger says there’s at least a small possibility that the NHL could experience another full-season lockout. A few months of no NHL hockey would be bad enough for fans, but another full season lost? Terrible, terrible thought. Especially for that game we all want to attend on Jan. 1…

A year ago today, the hockey world experienced great loss, as a plane carrying the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team crashed in Belarus. Now, the team returns to the ice.

Here was a very moving tribute to former Red Wing Ruslan Salei, played before a tournament named in his honor in Belarus.
